Health and Wellness

The Alberta College and Association of Chiropractors (ACAC) acknowledges the World Health Organization in its definitions of Health and Wellness: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well‐being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Wellness is the optimal state of health of individuals and groups with a focal concern on the realization of the fullest potential of an individual physically, psychologically, socially, spiritually and economically, and the fulfillment of one’s role expectations in the family, community, place of worship, workplace and other settings.”

As primary health care providers, chiropractors recognize and affirm that the improvement and maintenance of health is achieved through combinations of interventions and procedures in the prevention, alleviation and treatment of disorders; and this is further supported by an adherence to and endorsement of principles that are generally considered to be health promoting or positive determinants. These principles and determinants include, but are not limited to:

  • spinal and joint health
  • exercise and active living
  • optimized or targeted nutrition
  • mental well‐being
  • body weight management
  • ergonomic optimization
  • injury prevention
  • lifestyle monitoring
  • sexual health awareness
  • cognizance of economic and social conditions
  • issues of aging
  • identification of addiction or substance abuse

The ACAC expects that doctors of chiropractic in Alberta will be knowledgeable about the principles of health restoration, maintenance and enhancement to achieve wellness.

“The Doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest her or his patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” -Thomas Edison (1903)
